Description
Yaesu FT-101/ FT-101 B/E/EE/EX HF Transceiver Capacitor KitThis is a complete electrolytic capacitor replacement kit (except the two 100uf/500V caps - check my "view other items" for these caps) for the
Yaesu FT-101 B/E/EE/EX
transceiver.
The FT-101E is truly a collector's item for the vintage ham radio enthusiast and represents one of the best of the '70's in HF gear. Electrolytic capacitors have a design life span which one has to recognize if the intent is to keep your FT-101E running for a long time to come.
Electrolytics over time change value due to leakage, electrical stress, heat exposure etc., and can be very annoying to trouble shoot especially when intermittent. There are 61 small electrolytics used in the FT-101E so for those who like probability calculations, figure out the failure rate possibility for capacitors that already have 30 years of service!
In all cases the capacitors have been replaced with the exact value of the original, but in many cases I was able to take advantage of smaller modern day components increasing the voltage rating of the replacement unit.
Included in the kit is an installation guide to help those along who might feel a bit nervous doing this type of board work.
Technical Notes:
** One concern was what effect there is on alignment of the radio. In one word - "none", the capacitors to be changed are all power supply related, audio board, and de-coupling in all boards. The only measurement that should be checked is the AVR +6v board setting as described in the owner's manual.
** How hard are the boards to remove? Well if you remember the old XT computers from the '70's, they may have shared the same slot hardware. The boards all plug-in with no wiring harness to unplug or remove. There will then be 4 capacitors remaining on the underside which are terminal connected and are a straight cut and solder in the new component. There are few radio's out there like the FT-101E which are so easy to service!
** Installation Time is approximately 4 hours from start to finish for an experienced technician. All others take your time and enjoy, it's a fun project!
The kit is comprised of 61 capacitors covering all models.
The capacitor kit shown in the photo is generic in nature as I have a wide variety of kits for Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu. Capacitors used in the kit are brand new
Nichicon/Panasonic
rated at 85 deg. C or higher.
