WHY DO LEAVES TURN BROWN?
The many delightful shades of green of
the leaves of different trees and plants
are, to a large extent, due to the green
colouring-matter, or pigments, in those
leaves. This colouring matter is called
chlorophyll. With the help of this substance
each leaf acts as a small food factory for
the plant, producing from air and water
nourishment essential to proper growth.
Each such factory can work only if it
receives enough sunlight and warmth. As
autumn comes, with its colder, darker days,
each chlorophyll factory works less and
less and other pigments (red, yellow, etc.)
take over. This change turns the leaves to
those beautiful autumn tints.
