    Description

    Icom IC-746PRO HF/VHF Ham Radio Transceiver HF / 50 MHZ / 144 MHZ., PS-125, SM-20, and UT-102.
    Includes transceiver, original manual and schematics, PS-125 power supply, and SM-20 desk mic.
    Includes UT-102 voice module installed.
    MARS/CAP mod has been performed, and a recent repair was made. The details of that repair is listed below:
    The radio presented with the fabled "Sudden Death Syndrome" which has numerous pages on the web dedicated to it.
    The IC that fails is the pre-driver IC (IC151) in the schematics. It is no longer available from Icom, and most electronics dealers have sent the part to obsolete status. I found an amateur in the UK who had them, so I bought one from him. This brought the transmit back online.
    The remaining mods had to do with preventing this failure in the future. This IC is/was used in the Icom 756Pro series as well and did not experience any of the related sudden death syndrome. The difference between the 2 designs is the 756 only powers this IC during transmit, while the 746 has power to IC151 all the time. The mod has been performed (as detailed in the attachment) to replicate the 756 design switching power to the IC. Additional mods include installing (or in this case replacing) the PIN Diodes used to protect the IC151 from static charges, and a choke added to prevent nearby RF from frying the IC.
    The radio was tested on the bench and into a dummy load in all modes at max power. No defects have been noted. The radio was in service at FD for most of the event (it was placed into service late on Saturday) and performed normally for the entire time it was used. I have also had the unit on the air after field day with good performance.
